History

Humble Beginnings

As a young boy, Stanislaus “Stonie” Wibbenmeyer worked at the Buehler Meat Market in Perryville, Missouri. The son of a stone mason, Stonie quickly found a knack for a trade of his own, forging what would become a prosperous career as a butcher. After learning many of the tricks of the trade from Sam Buehler, Stonie began working at Duerr Meat Market in the Perryville public square in 1930. There Stonie managed the market for nearly 20 years as he and his wife Beulah raised their eight children.

At the market, Stonie honed his skills as a craftsman and community leader. A testament to his talent, Stonie was one of only a few butchers who could make bockwurst from the original German recipe, handed down from generations past to the new generations in the United States. When the market closed in the summer of 1959, Stonie sensed a unique opportunity to forge a new business on his own—opening Stonie’s Sausage Shop just two months later in October 1959.

Family Tradition

In that small, concrete-block building on the western edge of town, Stonie began what would become a four-generation business. Built on the value of providing an exceptional product with the utmost care for the customer, Stonie started out doing small custom curing jobs, but over time the business would become a staple of the Perryville community.

In 1962, Stonie’s son Don joined the business, where father and son would work alongside one another until Stonie’s passing in 1975. Don’s son, Roger, soon came aboard in 1975, and once again father and son worked side by side. In 1997, Don retired and Roger’s son Tyson came aboard, marking the fourth generation of Wibbenmeyers to work in the business.

Growing Into the Next Century

Together, Roger, his wife Barb, and Tyson shared an ambitious dream for Stonie’s. They didn’t say no to any opportunities that came knocking, and they began to expand their product line, retail space, and offer new services like deer processing and sandwiches for lunch time. With a bit of a competitive streak, Roger and Tyson began attending and quickly winning state-wide competitions, where they learned new tricks for making the best cured meat around. You can see many of their awards and trophies in our shop (and even more in the basement)!

After expanding onto the original stone building, Stonie’s added new equipment and became USDA certified, allowing production to increase to the current output of one thousand-pound-plus of product generated each week. From there, the business grew rapidly into the Stonie’s you’ll recognize today. In 2006, Stonie’s moved into its current location on Edgemont Boulevard, allowing hungry traveler’s to easily access delicious snacks to fuel their road trip in addition to our regular local business.
